Digital Dairy Chain

Future Skills
Road-mapping

The Digital Dairy Chain impacts on a vital source of economic activity and employment in rural regions.

Workforce for the Future

There is a lack of high-value employment opportunities across Southwest Scotland and Cumbria and there is an outward migration of young people and professionals from the region. This has a significant impact on the economy, with 63% of the region’s local authority areas reporting a negative prosperity gap.

Focus on Manufacturing

By focusing on dairy manufacturing, the Digital Dairy Chain impacts on a vital source of economic activity and employment in rural regions such as ours. There are currently 52 dairy processing businesses based in the region, ranging from large multi-nationals to small artisan producers, adding value to milk from around 1,300 farms.

Digital Skills

Led by the University of the West of Scotland, the Digital Dairy Chain will be launching a comprehensive audit of anticipated digital skills needs in the sector across the next 10-25 years.

Workforce for the Future

A ‘Workforce for the future’ roadmap will be developed with a focus on aligning dairy industry needs with education and training provision in the region. This will inform the development of industry-relevant CPD.

Skills Forum

A Skills Forum will also be set up to facilitate on-going engagement between industry and education and training providers.
